Archaeological excavation of 13 wooden stakes in Lai Xuan commune


(Haiphong.gov.vn) – On February 18th, 2020, the City People’s Committee issued the Decision of emergency archaeological excavation of 13 wooden stakes discovered in Lai Xuan commune, Thuy Nguyen district, Hai Phong city. Accordingly, the City People’s Committee allowed the Institute of Archaeology to preside and coordinate with the Hai Phong Museum and the People’s Committee of Thuy Nguyen district to excavate emergency archaeology in the fish pond of ​​Mr. Dao Van Den family in hamlet 11, Lai Xuan Commune, Thuy Nguyen district. The excavation time is from February 18th, 2020 to March 31st, 2020, with an excavation area of ​​400 m2, chaired by the excavation is Dr. Bui Van Hieu – Deputy Director of the Center for Underwater Archaeology Research, Institute of Archaeology.

During urgent excavation, the licensed agencies should be attention to protect the strata structures of the monument; have responsibility for propagating to people about protecting local cultural heritage. The artifacts is collected during excavation, Hai Phong Museum, Department of Culture and Sports are responsible for preserving to avoid damage, mislay and report the plans to protect and promote the value of these artifacts to the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, City People’s Committee.

Previously, according to the report of the People’s Committee of Thuy Nguyen district, on February 9th, 2020, Mr. Dao Van Den’s family in hamlet 11, Lai Xuan commune, Thuy Nguyen district, Hai Phong city discovered 13 wooden stakes at the bottom of the fish pond after they pumped water to harvest fish. On February 12th, 2020, experts and researchers from the Institute of Archaeology conducted a survey of the area where wooden stakes were found. They supposed that the wooden stakes discovered in this pond have a great significance in research of Bach Dang battle in 1288.

Currently, the area of ​​these wooden stakes located at the junction of Kinh Thay, Da Vach and Da Bac rivers and this is the fish pond of Mr. Dao Van Den’s family. Some wooden stakes have shown signs of deterioration such as: the stakes have been cut flat, some stakes are located in the rock embankment, especially the family is conducting the suction of mud, improve the bottom for fish farming. Therefore, if it is not organized emergency excavation, the above wooden tales will be destroyed and unable to study the overall battle on the Bach Dang River as well as propose conservation solutions, promoting values ​​for wooden stake relics in Dam Thuong area, Lai Xuan commune, Thuy Nguyen district.
