Hung Dao Vuong Tran Quoc Tuan is a military genius. He has sayings that are saved in history books, become lessons for posterity.
After the defeat in 1258, in 1285, King Nguyen told his son, named Thoat Hoan to take his army to invade our country. The enemy was very strong, they went straight to Thang Long. Facing the very strong enemy, Emperor Tran Thanh Tong worried and asked if he should be surrender. Quoc Quoc Tiet Tran Tran Hung replied: “Please kill me before surrendering”.
In the second resistance war against Yuan – Mongol (1285), on the way pursue the enemy, Da Tuong said, “Yet Kieu definitely will not move his boat if he does not see the Hung Dao Vuong”. As expected, when Tran Hung Dao arrived, only the Yet Kieu boat was still there, and he was very happy, saying, “The flamingos who want to fly high must rely on the six wing posts. If there are no six pillars of wings, then the birds are normal. ” The idea of Hung Dao Vuong is very clear, a general how talent then he still must be base on his good assistants.
After 2 consecutive defeats in 1258 and 1285, in 1287 the Yuan Dynasty invaded our country for the third time. On 11/14/1287, when he heard that the Yuan army are hitting the Phu Luong, King Tran Nhan Tong asked Hung Dao Vuong that: “How is fight the enemy this year?”. He asserted: “This year, we will be idle in the fighting with the enemy.”
In the second lunar month of 1287, the Yuan dynasty mobilized the army, divided into many wings to attack on Dai Viet. Dai Viet officials asked to arrest the young people to strengthen the army’s power, but Hung Dao Vuong disagreed. He said: “The troops needs elite, not need crowded. Even if there were a million soldiers, what could Bo Kien do? ”. Not only in the opinion of Tran Quoc Tuan, although facing a great and professional fight army of the Yuan Dynasty, but with a reasonable strategy, the Tran army and people defeated the invaders with the pinnacle of Bach Dang victory in 1288.
For common interest, Tran Quoc Tuan ready dismiss his hating for Tran Quang Khai (from the previous King). King’s father Tran Thai Tong called Tran Quoc Tuan to come, and want him become a chancellery to welcome the Northern envoy. Tran Quoc Tuan answered: “The reception of ambassadors, I did not dare to refuse, but become a chancellery, I did not dare to obey. When the mandarins went to fight the enemy far away, Quang Khai followed the King Tran Thanh Tong, in this time you want me become a chancellery, I think it is not a good idea, because this will not please the officials and Quang Khai. Please wait for the everybody come back, I will obey you and it is not late.”
In June 1300, Hung Dao Vuong was seriously ill, King Tran Anh Tong came to visit and asked, “If there is any unlucky thing, the Northern invaders come to our country, what is the plan?”. Tran Quoc Tuan said that: “Suspending citizen contributions is the sustainable and profound strategy, that is the most preeminent policy to hold the country forever.”
Also discussing the strategy to fight the enemy for the next generation, Hung Dao Vuong took the evidence of the process of fighting against foreign invaders of the nation and said: “They depend on the battlefield, we rely on the small army, simple weapon. Using the small army, simple weapon to control the battlefield is the normal of military tactics. If you see its troops drawing like fire and wind, then it is easy to overpower. If it moves slowly like silkworms to eat, doesn’t need to win quickly, then we have to choose good generals, consider the right to turn, like chess, depending on the time of creation, our army like father and son, then we can use it ”.
An Sinh Vương Tran Lieu (Tran Quoc Tuan’s father) and his younger brother, Tran Thai Tong, had the hatred each other, so before his death, Tran Lieu told Tran Quoc Tuan to take the throne. He put it in his heart but he think it was not right, after that he asked the servants like Yet Kieu, Da Tuong, son Hung Vu Vuong Tran Quoc Nghien, they all advised against doing so. As for the second son, Hung Nhuong Vuong, Tran Quoc Tang advised him to usurp the throne. After hearing that, Tran Quoc Tuan drew his sword and told him: “The disloyalty man came from not filial son” and tried to kill Quoc Tang. Hung Vu Vuong hurriedly ran to cry to ask for forgiveness, Tran Quoc Tuan just forgave. Afterwards, he told Hung Vu Vuong: “After I died, we covered the casket and then let Quoc Tang come and visit.”
Before his death, the eminent general told his children: “If I die, I must be cremate, take a bone-bearing object, bury it secretly in An Lac garden, and then level and plant trees like before, so people do not know where, and my bones disintegrate quickly. ”
